The Best Godzilla Franchise Officially Returns In 4 Months

Godzilla is an icon of cinema, and he’s nearing a highly anticipated return. Ever since the kaiju’s introduction in the 1954 classic monster movie by Ishirō Honda, he’s become a character the entertainment industry can’t stay away from, with Toho, major Hollywood studios, and more taking turns to bring the King of Monsters to life in different ways. The result has been Godzilla playing central roles in multiple movie franchises. There was the original iteration of the mythology that spanned from 1954’s Godzilla to Terror of Mechagodzilla in 1975. Toho then rebooted Godzilla’s story in 1984, 1999, 2016, and 2023. There was also Roland Emmerich’s attempted franchise starter with 1998’s Godzilla. More recently, its been Legendary’s Monsterverse that Godzilla has been the star. Since 2014, he’s appeared in four movies, as well as an appearance in Apple TV+’s series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. 2027 will continue the franchise when Godzilla returns for Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. But the giant lizard-like creature won’t be out of sight until then.

The original 1954 Godzilla film was directed by a visionary Japanese filmmaker and served as an allegory for the horrors of nuclear weapons. Who directed the original Godzilla?
AAkira Kurosawa
BIshiro Honda
CHayao Miyazaki
DTakashi Shimura
✓ Correct! Ishiro Honda directed the original 1954 Gojira. The film was a direct response to the Lucky Dragon No. 5 incident and nuclear testing in the Pacific. Akira Kurosawa was Honda’s close friend but directed samurai films, and Takashi Shimura was actually an actor in the film.
✗ Destroyed! The answer is Ishiro Honda. Kurosawa directed Seven Samurai, Miyazaki is the anime legend behind Studio Ghibli, and Shimura was an actor who appeared in the original film. Honda’s vision turned nuclear fear into cinema’s greatest monster.

↻ RISE AGAIN
In exactly four months, Godzilla makes his grand return as part of another franchise when Godzilla Minus Zero hits U.S. theaters on November 6; it debuts in Japan on November 3. When the movie arrives, it will turn the 21st century’s best version of Gojira into a franchise star.
Godzilla Minus Zero Turns This Godzilla Story Into A Franchise
Godzilla Minus Zero is the second installment of a rebooted Godzilla franchise from Toho. The first, Godzilla Minus One, came in 2023 and became an instant classic for the iconic character. Directed by Takashi Yamazaki (who also wrote the script and did the VFX), Godzilla Minus One was met with nearly universal acclaim, became an Oscar-winning film, and achieved great success at the box office. The 2023 film took Godzilla back to a post-World War II Japan for a story centered around the human experience of locals in the wake of devastating events. Their world is put in even more danger once the kaiju surfaces and begins a destructive rampage, resulting in a variety of characters, including the Shikishima family, banding together to try and protect their homeland. How Godzilla Minus One made him a terrifying threat and a metaphor for national trauma is why this version is so heralded. Although the movie was never guaranteed to be a franchise starter, Godzilla Minus One’s ending left the door open for more stories in this world. The film’s incredible response and $116 million box office haul (which is about 11x the budget) made it inevitable that Toho would work with Yamazaki to continue the story, paying off teases like the black infection Noriko has and Godzilla regenerating. Godzilla Minus Zero picks up two years later when Godzilla resurfaces and puts the Shikishima family’s lives in danger again. The returning cast includes Ryunosuke Kamiki (Kōichi), Minami Hamabe (Noriko), Munetaka Aoki (Sōsaku), and others. Yamazaki is back as the director and writer, as he looks to expand a riveting interpretation of Godzilla.
Godzilla Minus Zero Has Bigger Expectations Than Godzilla Minus One
Godzilla in a destroyed city in Godzilla Minus One
Not only will Godzilla Minus Zero turn this incredible take on the character into a franchise, but it will do so as it battles greater expectations. While there was lots of interest in seeing another Godzilla movie in 2023, especially with an acclaimed Japanese filmmaker like Yamazaki on board, there was also no real way of knowing if the movie would be another strong modern outing (like Shin Godzilla) or not connect with audiences.
After a near-perfect 99% Rotten Tomatoes score, an Oscar win for Best Visual Effects, and a record box office for a Toho Godzilla film, Godzilla Minus One became a worldwide phenomenon. Godzilla Minus Zero will now have the pressure to match or exceed the quality, accolades, and financial performance of the first film. That will not be easy to do. The one area Godzilla Minus Zero should have the easiest time surpassing the first film is at the box office, though. The recognition that the title carries with it at this point should ensure audiences around the globe support it, especially if Yamazaki delivers the goods again. Winning another Oscar or having reviews as positive as before could be difficult. But so long as Godzilla’s return in Godzilla Minus Zero is great, most should be satisfied in four months.
