Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced: Fastest Ways To Defeat & Board Ships

Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced offers an abundance of mission types and side activities for you to engage in while exploring its massive map, but one that you’ll be doing the most frequently, or at least should be doing, is plundering enemy ships. Even putting aside the novelty of Black Flag Resynced’s Naval Combat, it’s incredibly useful as a way to earn money, repair your ship during combat, or add to your fleet to send on missions. Given how frequently you’ll be taking on other vessels and boarding ships to wipe out their crew, it can become a tedious process depending on how often you engage with the mechanics. Thankfully, there are several ways to drastically speed up these encounters, allowing you to reap their rewards and be on your way with ease.
Easiest Ways To Defeat Ships In Black Flag Resynced
Before you’re actually able to board an enemy ship in Black Flag Resynced, you’ll need to reduce its HP to 0 by attacking it with the Jackdaw’s weaponry. While just about any weapon will do, getting into the habit of combining multiple attacks of different types in quick succession can drastically save time while engaging in naval combat, especially while facing several ships at the same time.
Rather than attacking and boarding every ship you see, you can use Edward’s spyglass to view the rarity and cargo of each vessel you come across, helping you to choose your targets more wisely.
The first thing you’ll want to get into the habit of doing is starting off by launching a mortar shell before engaging in combat, as enemy ships won’t try to outmaneuver mortars unless they’re already hostile to you. After your far-reaching attacks, you can either charge straight ahead and fire off your frontal cannons before going in for a ramming charge if you’ve upgraded your ship or unlocked the extra damaging ability from Padre. If you’re more hesitant to get in close or are up against a larger ship that you can’t take down with a few swift attacks, you’ll have better luck circling them while unleashing your broadside cannons right at their hull before following up with the swivel-mounted cannons at their weak points, all while launching barrels behind you to prevent being circled and rammed yourself, or being surprised by other ships joining the fight. Another tip I would highly recommend for choosing your targets is to keep an eye out for any fleets of English and Spanish ships fighting each other, as you can often join in to help one side without the other becoming hostile to you, making things far easier than taking whole groups on alone.
Fastest Way To Board Enemy Ships & Reduce Morale In Black Flag Resynced
Once you’ve disarmed your opponents and lined your ship close enough to theirs, you’ll be able to board and start taking care of the crew to claim it for yourself. While the original Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag had stricter requirements, like killing a certain number of enemies, things have been streamlined in Black Flag Resynced with the addition of a moral meter that you’ll need to reduce to 0 before its crew will surrender.
If you line up your ship more closely before boarding, it will drastically reduce the time spent waiting for your crew to pull it in close enough to invade.
There are three main ways to reduce morale in Black Flag Resynced, those being killing crew members, destroying gunpowder barrels, or cutting the flag from the top of the main mast. Despite being effective, climbing to the top of the mat can take a significant amount of time and leave you incredibly vulnerable to enemies with muskets waiting above, or even pistols from below. If you’re already waiting for your crew to bring the ship closer, however, you can always climb your own mask and jump to theirs once it gets close enough to save some time instead of swimming over, especially if you also take advantage of the step rope that launches you high into the air rather than climbing straight from the bottom. By far the most effective way of reducing morale, however, is using the swivel-mounted cannon at the back of your ship to target their gunpowder barrels. While you’ll only have 5 shots per boarding, if you hit every barrel, you can use the remaining ammo to take out elite enemies like Captains or groups rather than fighting them one-on-one after you’ve boarded.
The Swivel cannons will not work on larger ships like Man-O-Wars, requiring you to either manually ignite or shoot the gunpowder barrels yourself after boarding.
Once you’re finally ready to take out the rest of the crew, you should take advantage of smoke bombs and pistol ammo as much as you can in between parries and takedown combos, as these will allow you to take out opponents with a single button press each. You can often easily restock by looting slain enemies after you’re finished, although you’ll only have a brief moment to loot after killing the final enemy.
What To Do With Captured Ships In Black Flag Resynced
After you’ve finished reducing the morale of a ship’s crew to 0, you’ll have a brief cutscene before being given up to four choices on what to do with the captured ship, depending on the size of the vessel and if you’ve unlocked Edward’s fleet yet, which I would recommend choosing based on the following criteria:
Selection
Effect
When to choose
Repair
Repairs the current and next bar of the Jackdaw’s health
During combat against cheaper ships or when dangerously low on health
Lower Wanted Level
Reduces the wanted level to prevent pirate hunters from spawning
If you don’t want to get forced into a drawn-out and potentially deadly encounter against nearby pirates
Send To Kenway’s Fleet
Adds the ship to your Fleet’s Berth slots
If you need to fill out or replace your fleet ships, especially when boarding ships with higher star difficulties
Take Commander’s Chest
Increases the financial payout of the defeated ship
If you don’t immediately need any of the other options (This option isn’t available for smaller ships)
Although Naval Combat is still the same at its core, taking advantage of the changes made to the mechanics in Black Flag Resynced will ensure you have a much better time while travelling the seas, especially considering that plundering ships is one of the most lucrative methods of earning money in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced.
