Netflix’s The Witcher Movie Is So Good, It Never Needed Henry Cavill

The Witcher is one of Netflix’s most notable fantasy projects in recent years, and a key part of its early success was Henry Cavill’s involvement – however, the best Witcher movie was so good that it never needed Cavill’s presence. Netflix has a wide variety of TV shows, and when it comes to fantasy shows, some of its original productions now rank among the best TV shows of all time. One of Netflix’s most successful fantasy shows to date is The Witcher, based on the book series by Andrzej Sapkowski. The Witcher had a strong start when it debuted on Netflix in 2019, but unfortunately, its problems began in season 2. The Witcher’s second season made drastic changes to the story and characters from which it’s still trying to recover. Although seasons 3 and 4 were an improvement, The Witcher hasn’t fully convinced its audience. The Witcher is currently preparing its fifth and final season, but it has already been branching out with spinoffs, beginning with Nightmare of the Wolf. Nightmare of the Wolf is an adult animated movie directed by Kwang II Han, and it takes place many years before the events of the main series. At the time of writing, and since Nightmare of the Wolf, The Witcher has had two more spinoffs with the live-action prequel miniseries The Witcher: Blood Origin and the animated movie Sirens of the Deep, but Nightmare of the Wolf stands as the best, and it proved that the Netflix franchise didn’t need Henry Cavill.
Nightmare of the Wolf Is The Best Witcher Spinoff To Date
The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf takes the audience back to the year 1165 to meet a young Vesemir (voiced by Theo James), a skilled witcher who would go on to become the mentor of many other witchers, among them Geralt of Rivia. Nightmare of the Wolf explores his backstory and what led him to become a witcher, as well as the discovery of a dangerous conspiracy that leads to the fall of Kaer Morhen. At the end of Nightmare of the Wolf, Vesemir reunites with the children and witcher trainees who escaped Kaer Morhen, one of them Geralt, and he goes on to train them and serve as their father figure. At the time of writing, Nightmare of the Wolf holds a perfect critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, and it has been praised for its animation, tone, character development, action scenes, and expansion of the lore of The Witcher. Before Nightmare of the Wolf was released, there was some doubt about whether it could succeed as it didn’t include Geralt or Henry Cavill, but ultimately, Geralt wasn’t necessary. Nightmare of the Wolf is a well-written fantasy action movie with a strong and complex main character with a direct connection to the main show. The events of Nightmare of the Wolf are important to those in season 2 of The Witcher, as it goes into what really happened at Kaer Morhen. In the end, Nightmare of the Wolf survived and succeeded without Geralt and Cavill.
Nightmare of the Wolf Proved The Witcher Could Survive Without Henry Cavill
Lieam Hemsworth looking serious as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher season 4
Although Henry Cavill was the lead actor of The Witcher during the show’s first three seasons, the world of The Witcher didn’t need him to succeed. The first proof of this was Nightmare of the Wolf, with a story that didn’t include Geralt (except as a minor, almost cameo appearance) and thus didn’t require Cavill’s work. Surely, Blood Origin also didn’t feature Cavill’s Geralt, but the show wasn’t well written.
The animated movie Sirens of the Deep had Geralt as its main character, voiced by Doug Cockle, but like Blood Origin, it wasn’t well-written and didn’t add to the main show. Season 4 of The Witcher was the first one without Cavill and with Liam Hemsworth as Geralt, who greatly surprised the audience with his performance. As harsh as it is, The Witcher’s success never depended on Henry Cavill, and Nightmare of the Wolf proved that even before Cavill left the main show.
