There’s Only One Class Of Dragon Ball Fighter Goku and Vegeta Will Never Surpass

Generally speaking, Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball franchise has always handled its signature tropes, such as overcoming one’s limits, to an iconic degree. Son Goku has gone from a mysteriously strong analogue to the mythical Monkey King from Journey to the West, to powerful Saiyan warrior, to a transcendently powerful being able to grapple with gods, planet-eating wizards, and more. But as of currently in the latest canon developments such as in Dragon Ball Super, a ceiling has begun to appear both for Goku and his enemy-turned-rival and ally, Vegeta. As soon as a proper presence of divine beings like Angels and Gods of Destruction emerged, everything changed.

It’s a little hard to imagine, given Goku and Vegeta have famously seen immensely powerful beings as a challenge to overcome, rather an a benchmark that they could never exceed. By Namek alone, Goku was initially pushing power levels in the tens of thousands, but in a famous progression of power-ups and attaining Super Saiyan, he took leaps and bounds over this point to reach over 100 million. Vegeta has constantly seen Goku as his ultimate rival to surpass, so to see characters like Whis and Beerus, and even higher-up entities like Grand Zeno, as the sorts of divine classes they can’t overcome, comes both as a reasonable benchmark and a solid hint for the future.
Goku And Vegeta Will Likely Never Surpass These Characters, And That’s Okay

Seeing Goku reach Super Saiyan God in the Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods movie and still not defeat the pudding-obsessed God of Destruction, Beerus, was a strong moment that reminded fans that there are some heights even Goku isn’t intended to clear. While both Vegeta and Goku can reasonably take other universes’ Gods of Destruction, save for Universe 7. But more so than even merely Beerus, their more unattainable benchmark is that of the Angels who attend to these Gods, like Whis. In a state of perpetual Ultra Instinct, there’s not been a conceivable way for either Goku or Vegeta to surpass that level of control or raw power, with the former hardly reaching a similar status just yet.

The Dragon Ball franchise is filled with ultra-powerful villains, but the strongest characters aren’t always the most visually striking.

Provided an antagonist on the level of Angels doesn’t push such a development, there’s not really a need for such a hurdle to be cleared. Moro and Zamasu certainly ranked highly among Dragon Ball Super’s strongest beings, but the latter in particular was still utterly snapped out of existence by Grand Zeno, supreme ruler of the multiverse. Being that strong trivializes threats for Goku and Vegeta, which would also sterilize the thrill of a real challenge in the process, with Zeno in a particularly untouchable spot even beyond the Gods of Destruction or Angels. But those same two beings have already laid the paths for Goku and Vegeta’s apex forms ahead.
The Angels And Gods Of Destruction Are Dragon Ball Super’s Ultimate Benchmark

Ever since the Granolah the Survivor Arc in particular, there have been persistent hints that, for Goku, at least, his ideal state in mastering Ultra Instinct would be to get on a comparable level to that of Angels. Doing so would enable him to exist on a similar level to that of Whis and other Angels from before, like Merus, who have trained him. But in order to do so, Goku would need to fully exceed the benchmark of God of Destruction, which Goku hasn’t done yet. Even so, attaining such a state seems counterintuitive to Goku’s philosophy: becoming an Angel means remaining neutral in major conflict, beyond training other warriors, and Goku’s always spoiling for a fight.
But arguably far more fitting is Vegeta’s path to greatness ahead, training under Beerus to master his Ultra Ego form. Vegeta’s emotions empower him further to act as a Destroyer in this state, with Beerus himself acknowledging the Prince of Saiyans as a candidate. But even then, such a ship has already sailed for Vegeta, with him becoming far more invested as a protector of Earth and the universe at large, especially for the sake of his family. Essentially, these are the perfect goals for either Goku or Vegeta to reach in Dragon Ball Super, but attaining or exceeding them, and the baggage with what comes next, would fly in the face of their respective character development.

From the creative mind of Akira Toriyama, Dragon Ball is a mega multimedia franchise that spans back to the 1980s. Dragon Ball expanded quickly, starting as a serialized manga for Weekly Shonen Jump in Japan. It made its way overseas via manga and an anime adaptation that is enjoyed worldwide. Dragon Ball was the initial starting animated series that followed the adventures of the young Son Goku as he sought after the Dragon Balls. These mystical orbs would grant the wish of any who gathered them together. Then, the series would branch off into the immensely popular Dragon Ball Z, which followed Goku as an adult and featured high-intensity battles and Goku’s never-ending search to be the strongest. The series has also enjoyed several popular video game adaptations and continues to release several new animated series and theatrical films up to the recent popular Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.
