Red Dead Redemption 3 Marks The Start Of A Bold New Era

With Rockstar Games currently putting the finishing touches to Grand Theft Auto VI, talk has turned to the future of its second most successful franchise: Red Dead. Currently consisting of three entries, with its most recent, Red Dead Redemption 2, being widely regarded as one of the greatest video games of all time, it has been almost a decade of radio silence when it comes to a potential continuation of the action-adventure franchise set across the Wild West. After all, Rockstar may be wrapping up development of GTA VI ahead of its 19 November launch, but with the game expected to be its magnum opus, we can assume that a large majority of the studio will still be working on post-game content, especially with the launch of a new iteration of Grand Theft Auto Online. So, what does this mean for a potential Red Dead Redemption 3?
Red Dead Redemption 3 Is Going To Be A Very Different Game

In an interview back in December 2025, Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser revealed that another Red Dead Redemption installment would “probably happen.” However, with Houser no longer working at Rockstar Games, the jury is out on how much he actually knows. That being said, Rockstar parent company, Take-Two Interactive, also previously revealed that the Red Dead franchise would continue during an interview with CEO Strauss Zelnick back in 2023. So, surely, these two important figures are telling the truth. Right? Although a potential Red Dead Redemption 3 may be on the cards, unfortunately, Houser will not be involved despite being one of the creative leads on Red Dead Redemption 2. As such, he played a large role in the creation of Arthur Morgan himself, even basing the character’s tuberculosis diagnosis on his own grandfather. It begs the question: would Red Dead Redemption 3 suffer without Houser’s guidance?
Red Dead Redemption 2 Really Was The End Of An Era

In the interview, Houser shared:
“Each of the (Grand Theft Auto) games was kind of a standalone story. It’s not quite the same. I think it probably would be, in some ways, sadder if someone continued on Red Dead, because it was a cohesive two-game arc. That might be more sad to hear someone working on that. I don’t own the IP … that’s part of the deal. It’s a privilege to work on stuff, but you don’t necessarily own it.”
With many believing that Red Dead Redemption 3 would not be the same without Houser, it seems as though Rockstar will really have to pull out all the stops if it wishes to keep up the momentum of the beloved franchise. That is, if they continue it at all. However, there is no denying that a potential sequel will struggle to match the magic of Red Dead Redemption 2. It may not have celebrated its 10th anniversary yet, but there is no denying that it has cemented itself as a modern-day classic.
On top of that, even if Rockstar was to decide to work on another Red Dead entry, it would be years until it was eventually launched. Take the wait for GTA VI, for example. As such, Red Dead Redemption 2 truly marked the end of an era, and another era like it may not be seen in our lifetimes.
