Timothy Olyphant is one of the most prolific television actors of the past two decades, but what are the best TV characters of his career?
In an interview with People, author Elin Hilderbrand revealed her thoughts on The Five-Star Weekend series starring Olyphant. The Peacock show is based on Hilderbrand’s bestselling 2023 novel of the same name and revolves around a grieving widow and food influencer, Hollis (Jennifer Garner), as she hosts a weekend in Nantucket with friends from various stages of her life. Olyphant plays Jack, a former boyfriend from when Hollis was a teenager. The protagonist’s friends are Dru-Ann (Regina Hall), Tatum (Chloë Sevigny), Gigi (Gemma Chan), and Brooke (D’Arcy Carden). Hilderband praises the actors who were chosen, referring to them as “a dream cast” and “of a caliber beyond my wildest dreams.” She also explains why she is satisfied with the adaptation despite some changes from the source material. Check out her comments below:
There’s no other way to describe it than a dream cast. Jennifer (Garner) was made for this part and the rest of the stars are of a caliber beyond my wildest dreams.
My philosophy with my book’s adaptations is this: The book already exists, people can read it. The show is a different piece of art. With The Perfect Couple, Netlfix wanted a six-episode murder mystery, and that’s what the writers, cast, and crew delivered. Were things changed and left out? Yes, but the show as a whole is immensely satisfying and beautiful. The Five-Star Weekend hews closer to the original material, but there are still changes because it’s a different medium. I watch a lot of prestige TV and I wanted both showrunners to make compelling shows, and I gave them carte blanche to do so.
When asked about what she is most excited for readers to see translated to the screen, Hilderband revealed that it is the setting, as some of the show was filmed at Nantucket, which provides an authenticity previously missing from movies and shows that take place on the island. As for changes that she thinks readers will react to, she references an episode centered on a day spa that “will feel so organic” even though it wasn’t in the original book.
One of my favorite episodes of this show is set at a day spa — and Nantucket doesn’t even have a proper day spa. But when the readers see this episode, it will feel so organic to the story that they might wonder if there’s a spa scene in the book (there isn’t.)
Ahead of the July 9 premiere on Peacock, The Five-Star Weekend has received mostly positive reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, it debuted with a 79% critics’ score based on 14 reviews, 11 of which are “Fresh”, and only three of which are “Rotten” by the metrics of the aggregation site. ScreenRant’s The Five-Star Weekend review falls into the “Rotten” category, with Liz Hersey giving it five out of 10 stars and writing that it “is low on stakes and light on juicy secrets, ultimately feeling like Big Little Lies if it had been left out in the sun too long.” She also argues that “since Jack is such a bland and thankless role, Olyphant’s presence makes it all the more obvious that it’s a waste of his talents.”
For Olyphant and Carden, the series serves as a reunion six years after they worked together in The Good Place season 4, episode 10, “You’ve Changed, Man.” Carden played the series regular role of Janet, and Olyphant had a cameo in the episode as a fictional, exaggerated version of himself and the lawman character he often plays. The Five-Star Weekend is only one of several upcoming releases Olyphant has in store this year. On July 15, his new Apple TV crime thriller series Lucky will debut on Apple TV. The show also stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Annette Bening, and Aunjanue L. Ellis-Taylor.
As for movies, he has The Adventures of Cliff Booth coming to IMAX on November 25 before arriving on Netflix on December 23. He is reprising the role of James Stacy from Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood alongside Brad Pitt playing Cliff Booth again in the David Fincher-directed film. All eight episodes of The Five-Star Weekend come to Peacock on July 9.
