Yellowstone’s New Kevin Costner Replacement Addresses Dutton Ranch’s Rumored 5-Season Plan
Warning: SPOILERS For Dutton Ranch Season 1’s Finale – “El Padrino”Annette Bening addresses the possibility of Dutton Ranch lasting for five seasons, like Yellowstone. Dutton Ranch introduced Bening as Beulah Jackson, the Yellowstone spinoff’s version of Kevin Costner’s John Dutton. As the Jackson matriarch, Beulah carries the burden of perpetuating her family’s legacy, the 10-Petals Ranch. Dutton Ranch’s season 1 finale revealed that Beulah kept herself in Gucci by smuggling drugs from Mexico for fifteen years with her partner, Mariano Reyes (Raoul Max Trujillo).
In an interview with THR, Annette Bening was asked whether Dutton Ranch’s producers laid out the possibility of the Texas-based spinoff being a five-season show. Read Bening’s response below:
Annette Bening: “I’ve never heard the five-season thing. But having a certain amount of uncertainty and thinking, “Where is this going to go?” is fun. That’s interesting to me. Then, hopefully, I can contribute something and bring a dimension to whatever ideas they have going on that makes it stronger.”
However, Annette Bening says the idea of playing Beulah Jackson on Dutton Ranch for multiple seasons appeals to her:
Annette Bening: “Yes! It’s all the group that you’re hanging out with, and this is wonderful company to be in the midst of; everyone. We had a very, very harmonious experience. So, for me, at this stage, I get to do this interesting, challenging new world of Texas and ranching and being in Texas, and shooting there. It’s refreshing for me as a person, but also as an actor trying to find what’s underneath this woman. And working with people I really admire. I love walking on the set and seeing each of them — the guys playing my sons and my granddaughter; everyone. It’s really a pleasant experience.”
Dutton Ranch boasts the biggest original series launch in Paramount+ history, and the streamer renewed it for season 2 before season 1’s finale premiered. Dutton Ranch will return for its second season with a new showrunner, Benjamin Cavell, replacing Chad Feehan, the series creator who exited due to clashes with the actors and executive producers Taylor Sheridan and David Glasser. Dutton Ranch season 1 also ended in a cliffhanger, with Mariano’s henchmen kidnapping Carter (Finn Little), the adopted son of Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser). Meanwhile, Beulah suffered her own tragedy when a mysterious assailant murdered Rob-Will Jackson (Jai Courtney), her son and heir to the 10-Petals Ranch.
Annette Bening has many intriguing story threads in Dutton Ranch season 2, including her burgeoning romance with Everett McKinney (Ed Harris), which stalled after Beulah confessed her crimes as a drug smuggler and that she killed Rob-Will’s father when she was 18. In addition, Beth and Rip still technically work for Beulah, and that thorny entanglement must be resolved in season 2.
Multiple-time Emmy and Academy Award nominee Annette Bening is a legend of stage and screen, and is another A-list casting coup for Taylor Sheridan. It’s gratifying that Bening not only enjoys her part in Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe, but that she looks forward to filming Dutton Ranch with her talented cast and crew for many potential seasons to come.
