It’s Officially The End Of An Era For Starfield

Bethesda has built multiple franchises over the years (some inherited), but Starfield was supposed to be the next big thing for the studio. Instead, it was met with a somewhat polarizing response at launch, and some fans didn’t stick around to check out all the enhancements the game has made over time. Even some of those future content drops were polarizing, but it looks like the franchise is undergoing major changes. Now, thanks to new information from Bloomberg on this week’s Xbox restructuring, it seems like it might be the end of an era for Starfield. At this point, fans are demanding answers.
Based on the report, ZeniMax/Bethesda will shift strategies considerably: “ZeniMax will face a significant overhaul and will pivot to focus on its biggest franchises: Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein.” As many fans have noticed, there is no mention of Starfield. Rumors have been flying about a major restructuring of specific Xbox studios for weeks since the new CEO’s takeover, and it seems some of them may come to fruition. While Bethesda is still operational, they might be paring down to focus solely on their established successful brands. As this X post notes following the news, fans are not happy with the fact that Starfield might be going away forever: “I enjoyed Starfield. Sad to see it go, but they should’ve been ready to release ES6 in a timely manner after. The fact that people that were born when Skyrim released are old enough to drive now is a ridiculous wait. I think that waiting is what caused people to hate Starfield.” Another writes: “So, Starfield is dead. Not that Shattered Space or Terran Armada really served to boost the game. I think those missed the mark by a considerable degree. I don’t think the problem is Starfield but Bethesda struggling to make good content. Focusing won’t fix that.”
Starfield struggled to gain as much traction as the foundational Elder Scrolls and Fallout franchises, with some feeling like the game was slow and not fully featured at launch. Although myriad updates and even a few DLCs helped, they were too little too late in the eyes of some.
For now, Bethesda’s future seems to be pinned on delivering Fallout 5 and The Elder Scrolls 6. Between those releases, I don’t think we’ll be seeing anything major from Starfield anytime soon, unless another expansion is somehow in the pipeline. Bethesda has been busy, but fans want the big franchise games they’ve been waiting for to come out at some point.
