Warning: SPOILERS For Dutton Ranch Season 1, Episode 7 – “Den Of Sin” Dutton Ranch episode 7 that ends with a shocker reminiscent of Jon Hamm’s character’s death in Landman season 1. Taylor Sheridan wrote every episode of Landman’s hit first season, which introduced and killed off Monty Miller (Jon Hamm), the CEO of M-Tex Oil and employer of Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton). Like Landman’s West Texas setting, Dutton Ranch transplanted Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) from the Big Skies of Montana to the plains of Rio Paloma in South Texas. Following a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak that claimed the Dutton Ranch’s herd of cattle, Beth and Rip went to work for Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening) and the rival 10-Petals Ranch. The Jackson family celebrates the 10-Petals Ranch’s 190th anniversary in Dutton Ranch episode 7, but the gala takes a tragic turn after Rob-Will Jackson (Jai Courtney) forces Beulah to name him as her successor formally, bypassing Beulah’s choice, Joaquin Reyes (Juan Pablo Raba). What results is an unexpected possible death that could change Dutton Ranch forever.

It looks like Beulah could die from her stroke, if she hasn’t already. If that happens, Dutton Ranch season 1 showrunner Chad Feehan would ape how Taylor Sheridan killed off Landman’s Monty Miller, who was suffering from a heart condition. Monty took an extra episode to pass away in the hospital, and perhaps Beulah may as well. There’s been no announcement that Annette Bening is exiting Dutton Ranch, but it was a surprise when Landman killed off Jon Hamm. Taylor Sheridan’s hit Paramount+ neo-Westerns aren’t shy about casting A-list actors for relatively limited roles. Bening’s Beulah Jackson was positioned as a main character in Dutton Ranch, but that doesn’t mean her tenure wasn’t planned to end in season 1. Beulah seemed to be Dutton Ranch’s main villain, but as Beth and Rip got to know her, Ms. Jackson emerged as a complicated figure carrying the weight of the Jackson legacy. This makes Beulah like Yellowstone’s John Dutton (Kevin Costner), who was sympathetic despite the terrible things he did to protect the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch.
Dutton Ranch Sets Up A Legacy Problem Like Landman’s M-Tex

There was no ambiguity that Rob-Will was a bad seed, but Beulah’s flashback origin story revealed that Rob-Will’s father was a Six Flags mechanic named Luke (Cameron Cowperthwaite), who raped Beulah (Rebeca Robles) in 1981. Beulah then killed him, later telling Beth Dutton that Rob-Will’s father died in a flood. Rob-Will blackmailing Beulah into taking control of the 10-Petals Ranch is reminiscent of the crisis at Landman’s M-Tex after Monty Miller’s death. Although Monty named Tommy Norris as the new president, Monty’s inexperienced wife, Cami (Demi Moore), took control of the company. Eventually, Tommy quit and formed his own oil company in Landman season 2’s finale.
If ‘Mama B’ dies, then Rob-Will is the new boss.
The 10-Petals’ situation is worse because in Landman, Cami had Tommy to lean on, at least for a while, and she allied herself with Danny “Gallino” Morrell (Andy Garcia). Rob-Will looks to be in sole charge of the 10-Petals now after he tried to have Joaquin killed. Beulah’s original timeline was for Rob-Will to take over in five years, but if ‘Mama B’ dies, then Rob-Will is the new boss.
Even with the limited amounts that Dutton Ranch has shown Rob-Will, it’s clear he would be a disaster for the 10-Petals Ranch. Perhaps Rob-Will will install his daughter, Oreana Lynn (Natalie Alyn Lind), as his consigliere since she is at least a college grad. Oreana’s long-anticipated heel turn happened in Dutton Ranch episode 7. Meanwhile, Beth and Rip bet their immediate futures on Beulah and the 10-Petals, and they’re doomed too, if Dutton Ranch kills off Beulah Jackson like Landman did Monty Miller.
