HBO’s Record-Breaking 5-Part Comedy Has One Of The Best Casts

Many comedies, from Frasier’s relationship with his live-in father Martin to Hulu’s short-lived Reboot, have tried to bridge the generational gap. Even shows with a different main focus, like The Righteous Gemstones’ family-run mega-church and Schitt’s Creek’s riches-to-rags story, paid considerable attention to the differences between the generations. Yet the most nuanced, lifelike, and heart-tugging examination of a modern-day generational clash came from Hacks, which has taken the comedy scene by storm since its premiere in 2021 for that very reason. Hannah Einbinder’s Ava and Jean Smart’s Deborah seemed at first like an impossible pair, mainly because they both had real, glaring flaws that impeded their ability to connect with the people around them. While they were both likable in many ways, the show wasn’t afraid to make them unlikable in others. Deborah had a habit of pushing people away to avoid her own vulnerability, and, in the process, was often truly over-the-line mean and hurtful. Ava, meanwhile, self-sabotaged in her own way, making poor, impulsive decisions and lashing out when her feelings were hurt in ways she would later regret. Over time, though, they both learned from each other in equal doses and grew in ways that only someone with a radically different perspective could have inspired. Ava and Deborah weren’t generic stand-ins for their entire generations, but rather unique individuals who reflected many of the traits of their time. That was perhaps the show’s best quality, and it wasn’t limited to Ava and Deborah. It took the entire iconic cast to elevate Hacks into the historic show it became.
HBO’s Hacks Has Broken The Comedy Series Record For Emmy Nominations
With 23 nominations in 2024, The Bear broke the longstanding record set by Schitt’s Creek for the most nominations for a comedy series in a single season. In 2025, The Studio tied that record. In its fifth and final season, Hacks set a new record with 24 nominations ahead of the 2026 awards. In addition to an Outstanding Comedy nomination, both Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder have been nominated as lead and supporting actresses, respectively. If Jean Smart wins at this year’s Emmys, she will also become the first person to ever win the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series award for every single season of her show.
This would also make Smart the third actor to do this in any category, joining Bill Cosby, who won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for every season of I Spy, and Blythe Danner, who won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for both seasons of Huff.
Hacks Has The Perfect Ensemble Cast
Beyond Smart and Einbinder, Hacks also earned five nominations for Best Guest Actress in a Comedy Series, courtesy of Kaitlin Olson, Laurie Metcalf, Leslie Bibb, Cherry Jones, and Lauren Weedman. All five are well-deserved, especially as Hacks’ final season took a more episodic approach that allowed each episode’s story and actors to truly shine. Kaitlin Olson was especially captivating, capturing the complex mother-daughter relationship between DJ and Deborah in a limited amount of screen time. Paul W. Downs and Meg Stalter, who also received nods, have consistently been fan favorites, becoming an unexpected duo that rivals Ava and Deborah themselves.

HBO Max’s Near-Perfect Comedy Series Is So Good, It Deserves More Seasons
HBO Max’s beloved comedy series, with a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score and multiple Emmy Awards, deserves more seasons despite its recent finale.
Yet Hacks was always so much more than even these impressive faces. Deborah had an entire staff, each of whom was unique, entertaining, and memorable in their own right. Carl Clemons-Hopkins’ Marcus’ need for growth made his somewhat standalone arc a necessity in Hacks’ later seasons, while Rose Abdoo’s Josefina made a strong case for being the show’s funniest character. Altogether, Hacks’ ensemble cast made its world feel lived in while also bringing out new sides to the show’s main characters, giving Ava and Deborah a level of depth that they wouldn’t have attained on their own.
The Hacks Series Finale Makes Multiple Character Spinoffs Possible
Jimmy, Kayla, and Randi in Hacks
Most notably, the series finale could arguably function as a backdoor pilot for a Hacks spinoff following Jimmy and Kayla as the new leaders of Latitude talent agency. The finale saw the two oust Kayla’s father and Jimmy’s former boss and introduce themselves to the team as the organization’s new management. The situation established immediate conflict as several employees walked out.
However, Kayla and Jimmy weren’t the only new business owners in Hacks’ final episode. The finale began with the grand opening of The Diva, Deborah and Marcus’ new joint casino venture. Season 5 also saw the pair lining up their first residency and employing Deborah’s longtime friend Marty. There’s plenty of material for a spinoff about The Diva. Though it’s the least likely given Kaitlin Olson’s limited appearances in Hacks season 5, a family comedy about DJ, her wholesome boxer husband, and their child, is another show that practically writes itself after Hacks’ final episodes. All in all, these characters and stories may be best left to the imagination after Hacks reached its undeniably classy conclusion, but the fact that the show was still so rich in material even at its end is a further testament to its power.
