Law & Order SVU Star Reveals Major Update About His Character

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star offers a major update about his character. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit is a police procedural drama created by Dick Wolf for NBC. The series serves as the first spin-off of Law & Order. It initially starred Christopher Meloni as Detective Elliot Stabler. The show follows New York City’s Special Victims Unit, whose detectives investigate and prosecute crimes involving sexual assault and abuse. Many episodes are inspired by real-life criminal cases. After portraying Detective Odafin “Fin” Tutuola in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit for over 25 years, Ice-T has confirmed to TMZ that he will be back once again in a much bigger capacity. The musician-turned-actor revealed that although he only had a part-time role in season 27, he will be in every single episode of Law & Order SVU season 28 when the NBC procedural drama premieres this fall. The announcement arrives shortly after production for Law & Order: Special Victims Unit season 28 has begun. The news comes as a welcome surprise for fans of Ice-T who noticed his character’s reduced presence on the show during the previous installment of the long-running procedural drama.

The update is also reassuring to viewers who were afraid that Ice-T was being written off the show. Fin appeared less frequently than usual in season 27, and his limited screen time, coupled with the character getting brutally attacked, convinced the audience that the actor was being pushed out of the show after nearly three decades. However, Ice-T has repeatedly reassured fans that he never planned to leave the series, explaining that the reduced episode count is mainly due to the show’s production and budget. Ice-T has portrayed Fin since joining Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in season 2 in 2000. Over the past 25 years, the character has become one of the procedural’s defining figures alongside Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson. Earlier this year, he officially became the longest-running actor to portray the same character in a U.S. primetime scripted series after appearing in 400 episodes of the NBC crime drama.

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit season 28 will premiere on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at 9:00 PM ET and 6:00 PM PT on NBC.
