That new HBO Max show is The Man Will Burn, a four-part docuseries directed and executive produced by Jehane Noujaim and Vikram Gandhi. The show, which began shooting in 2021, documents the history of Burning Man, an annual art and self-acceptance-based event that takes place in the Nevada desert and traditionally features the burning of a large, male, wooden effigy on its penultimate night. The first episode of the series debuted on July 9, with the rest expected to air weekly on Thursdays through July 30. Just days after it premiered on HBO, The Man Will Burn has already surged up HBO Max’s daily chart of the most-watched television series on the platform in the United States (which is one of the only regions where it is available; internationally, the docuseries is available on a variety of other streamers, including Crave, Prime Video, and NOW TV). It debuted at No. 4 on the Top 10 chart as of July 11 and has since climbed to No. 3 on July 12. At the time of writing, The Man Will Burn is only behind Larry David’s historical sketch series Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness (No. 2, with three episodes currently available), and the Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon (No. 1, with three episodes of season 3 currently available). In spite of the fact that it has only aired one episode so far, The Man Will Burn has nevertheless managed to usurp every other title on the chart, including (from top to bottom) the popular adult animated series Rick and Morty, the romantic reality show 90 Day Fiancé, the true crime series Bodies in the Water, the crab fishing show Deadliest Catch, TLC’s Tourette’s-themed reality series Baylen Out Loud, the 90 Day spinoff The Last Resort, and ID and People Magazine’s true crime anthology Surviving a Serial Killer.

Because only one The Man Will Burn episode has aired, it seems highly likely that it will maintain its position on the HBO Max chart through the end of July. Every new episode will add viewing hours, both as people watch the new episode and as they catch up with the original episodes. It remains to be seen if the show will be able to compete with House of the Dragon or Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness, which also have new episodes airing weekly this month, but the docuseries has already established itself as a major streaming hit.
