Jim Carrey’s The Mask Brutal Horror Reboot Pitched By Evil Dead Burn Director

The Mask may be getting a whole new face. Many may know The Mask from the 1994 slapstick comedy starring Jim Carrey. However, it was originally adapted from a 1980s comic, which was far more violent, psychological, and leaning more towards horror. The comics were created by Mike Richardson in 1982 and first appeared as Masque in 1987 in Dark Horse Presents before being remade into the “Big Head” character by writer John Arcudi and artist Doug Mahnke for the anthology series Mayhem in 1989.
In a Reddit AMA following the release of Evil Dead Burn, director Sébastien Vaniček gave fans the freedom to ask him anything about the new movie or future plans. A fan asked what other property he would want to make a movie about, and the director gave a very straightforward and exciting answer:
“I think I would dig into THE MASK, but make it closer to the comic books. The comic books are actually very, very violent and dark.”
The Mask was officially created for Dark Horse Comics by Richardson and written by Arcudi with art by Mahnke, and is an incredibly dark, satirical, and ultra-violent horror-comedy where the mask actually turns those who wear it into psychotic killers. The major additions to the series included the 1991 The Mask, 1992-1993 sequel series The Mask Returns, and 1995’s The Mask Strikes Back. However, many know the New Line Cinema adaptation, released in 1994, with Carrey as the feeble bank clerk Stanley Ipkiss who stumbles upon the magical mask. Carrey’s version of The Mask was a more toned-down version of the comics with a lot less violence and dark material, which the original comics were known for. The 1994 adaptation was also Cameron Diaz’s acting debut and was considered to be a career-defining performance for Carrey, as he received a Golden Globe nomination.

The Mask grossed over $351 million worldwide against a reported budget of $23 million, and also earned an Oscar nomination for visual effects. It turned an incredibly dark and twisted comic into a family-friendly classic that stands the test of time.

It is currently rated 82% on Rotten Tomatoes by critics and is known worldwide for Carrey’s unforgettable and transformative performance. A sequel titled Son of the Mask was also released, but is mainly considered a massive flop by critics and for its poor box office performance. Vaniček taking on The Mask and staying more faithful to the comics would certainly have fans of the franchise flocking to theaters. It would be an interesting project, and certainly would be exciting to see who could take over such a legendary performance given by Carrey.
