1 Year After Suits LA, Stephen Amell Is Bringing Back Another Iconic Show

Although his time as Ted Black didn’t last long, Stephen Amell is headlining another franchise-expanding series that seems far more promising than Suits LA. After the original Suits took off as a major streaming success on Netflix, creator Aaron Korsh set his sights on a spinoff: the California-based Suits LA, meant to be a new chapter for one of the biggest late bloomers of the century. After years of production, Suits LA finally premiered in February 2025 as arguably the most highly-anticipated title of the year. Unfortunately, Suits LA practically fell flat immediately for longtime fans of the original series. Plenty of factors contributed to the inevitable failure of Suits LA, ranging from discordant tones in the overarching narrative to a palpable lack of identity. Nevertheless, while Stephen Amell’s performance couldn’t fill the shoes of Gabriel Macht’s iconic Harvey Specter, Ted Black wasn’t the sole reason Suits LA was canceled after a single season. Thankfully, Amell is set to make his return to U.S. television with Fox’s Baywatch reboot, and the upcoming sequel series already feels like a much better fit. Regardless, only time will tell if Amell and the rest of Baywatch’s cast can avoid becoming a one-season wonder.
Stephen Amell’s Role In Fox’s Upcoming Baywatch Reboot, Explained

Even those who have never seen an episode of Baywatch likely know that David Hasselhoff was one of the most prominent characters in the entire series. The 1980s heartthrob portrayed Mitch Buchannon, the iconic lifeguard captain who helmed the ensemble cast. In Fox’s 2027 reboot of Baywatch, Stephen Amell will take up the mantle as Hobie Buchannon, Mitch’s son who now oversees the new generation of lifeguards on the familiar Californian sand. Alongside a bevy of new recruits, however, Amell’s leading man will have his own familial drama. Joining Amell in the main cast of Baywatch (2027) are fresh faces, up-and-coming talents, and established favorites alike. Hassie Harrison’s Nat will be one of Hobie’s closest confidants, while Noah Beck’s Luke is a legacy firefighter who views Hobie as a mentor. Meanwhile, Shay Mitchell’s Trina left her big city job for the Venice Beach waves, and Thaddeus LaGrone’s Brad is a Marine who moved home to care for his ailing father. Livvy Dunne will also recur as Grace, a junior lifeguard on Hobie’s squad, and Brooks Nader will play Selene, Hobie’s rival lifeguard captain. Out of the exciting new additions, the most important character in Fox’s Baywatch will undoubtedly be Charlie Vale (Jessica Belkin), Hobie’s estranged daughter who moves across the country in hopes of joining the Baywatch team. Already, there are high stakes built into the show’s premise, and the reboot toes the line between nostalgia and reinvention. Numerous original series actors will either reprise their roles or appear in cameo capacities, adding a clever tether to lure in Baywatch (1989) fans. Yet, that doesn’t mean the entire project isn’t a major risk.
In Retrospect, Suits LA Deserved Better (But It Was Doomed To Fail)

Suits LA may have been panned by critics and sentenced to a premature death, but the series had real potential. The concept of an entertainment law firm is intriguing enough, as it’s a niche that no other legal procedural is hitting in the current market. Where the long-awaited spinoff went wrong was its connection— or lack thereof— to the original Suits. Truthfully, the moment Suits LA was revealed to be a spinoff and not a continuation, the show was already fighting a losing game, as it was simultaneously too unfamiliar and too similar to Suits’ winning formula.

14 Years Later, Harvey’s Best Line Is Still The Greatest Quote In Suits History

Harvey Specter remains one of the most iconic TV lawyers of all time, but his best line perfectly describes Suits— and the show’s entire legacy.

Similarly, the convoluted plots of murder trials, mobster conspiracies, and traumatic unresolved grief simply didn’t mesh with the glitzy blockbuster deals, A-list actor contract negotiations, and star-studded cameos on the other side of the set. From the beginning, it felt as though Suits LA couldn’t decide whether to be its own series or emulate its predecessor, and that disconnect ruined whatever promise the spinoff should have had.

Hopefully, Baywatch will avoid Suits LA’s mistakes, but it’s too soon to tell whether the new ensemble cast can hold a candle to the epoch-making original. At the same time, it certainly has a leg-up over spinoffs like Suits LA, as Baywatch (2027) will certainly not have to compete with its flagship series for popularity. In many ways, the Fox reboot feels like a reimagining for a modern audience— and that incredibly risky decision may just yield major rewards.
