Nick Frost was cast as the iconic and fan-favorite character Rubeus Hagrid in HBO’s retelling of Harry Potter, but recent comments suggest that what everyone knows about the character could change. In an interview with The Times, Frost opened up about the role, what it means to take over from the late Robbie Coltrane, and how he will adapt Hagrid for the eight-episode seasons and a more in-depth approach.
“I’ve tried to take what Robbie did and honor that … but also I’ve got eight hours here each series, while Robbie had two and a half — there has to be a bit more to him. So: he’s from Bristol. He’s nice, a bit quiet. Some people won’t like it. They’ll go, ‘Not my Hagrid.’ And that is all right.”
According to Frost, he manifested the role of Hagrid by writing the character’s name down 8,000 times. As an iconic staple of British screens, Frost is preparing for the role by studying characters he deems to be a good representation of what he believes Rubeus Hagrid to be. Frost also explained how he’s drawing inspiration from Michael Clarke Duncan’s John Coffey in the 1999 classic The Green Mile as a “huge, violent but childlike” character.
The actor also shared how his views are vastly different from those of the controversial author J.K. Rowling:
“She’s allowed her opinion, and I’m allowed mine, they just don’t align in any shape or form. I can’t control all that stuff. I only know what I feel, and I don’t really have to justify it to anyone. No one is ever going to be happy all the time. And I think what I have learnt over the past seven years is don’t even bother. Keep yourself true, that’s all you can do.”
Hagrid is known as a half-giant who is the gamekeeper and groundskeeper at the wizarding school Hogwarts. Coltrane’s approach to the character Hagrid was far more gentle and nurturing to Harry, Hermione and Ron throughout their time at Hogwarts. Coltrane shared how he spoke with the original author to understand the character, and modeled his portrayal based on the real-life English gang Hells Angels, who were rough, but had an incredibly soft interior.
HBO’s Harry Potter series begins on December 25.
