All 6 Scary Movie Films, Ranked

The Scary Movie franchise has returned for its first installment in 13 years, and where does the new horror spoof fit into the overall series ranking? Debuting back in the year 2000, the Scary Movie series uses crass humor to poke fun at some of the most popular horror films of the era. Throughout the Aughts, the franchise was the most recognizable parody series around. Developed by the trio of Marlon, Shawn, and Keenan Ivory Wayans, the first Scary Movie was a direct response to the pop culture shifts of the late 1990s. Films like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer were the primary targets, but the 2000 hit also spoofed teen movies in general. The movie grossed over $200 million, so several sequels would arrive over the next few years. Eventually, the creative minds behind the series changed. The Wayans departed and were replaced by David Zucker of Airplane! and Naked Gun fame. The series ran strong through 2006, before going on a multi-year hiatus. Scary Movie 5 premiered in 2013, but the franchise once again went dark. A sixth film, simply titled Scary Movie, has arrived after more than a decade of silence. The original creative team and cast have reunited for the horror spoof, but reviews have been pretty poor. As a matter of fact, critics have never been too kind to the comedy franchise. Regardless, the series is now an integral part of 2000s nostalgia. After more than 25 years, how does the Scary Movie franchise stack up?

Scary Movie 5 (2013)
Without the Wayans, without David Zucker’s direction, and without original cast members like Anna Faris and Regina Hall, Scary Movie 5 is totally devoid of the charm of the franchise. Largely divorced from the series’ continuity, the fifth installment parodies hits like Paranormal Activity when it tells the story new parents who are stalked by a demon. The early 2010s was a watershed era for horror, so there was a lot to make fun of. The new cast (including Ashley Tisdale and Erica Ash) have almost no cohesion, and neither does the plot. The first four films at least tried to weave a narrative that made sense, but Scary Movie 5 simply bounds from one scene to the next with little logical flow. The film is ultimately doomed by the fact that it simply isn’t funny. The parodies feel dusty and tired, and it’s clear that the writers didn’t understand what they were making fun of. Scary Movie 5 is reminiscent of those putrid spoofs like Epic Movie, which simply reference something and call it humor. The social media age was already transforming the world by 2013, and the worst Scary Movie installment was simply way too far behind the times.

Scary Movie (2026)
Though it may be painful to say, 2026’s Scary Movie is almost the worst film in the entire franchise. The return of the Wayans, as well as Faris and Hall, is not enough to keep the spoof from failing pretty spectacularly. It makes the right choice by essentially being a legacy sequel, but that’s one of the few things the movie does right. It markets itself as being edgy, but it mostly feels quaint. 13 years worth of films to parody seems like it would give the writers a glut of potential targets, but Scary Movie sticks to more recent releases. Sadly, the sixth installment doesn’t go much deeper than surface-level humor, and fails to adapt itself to the modern world. Just like Scary Movie 5, the 2026 release is a dated mess. What keeps the film from the bottom of the list is the nostalgia factor, and it’s impossible to deny the screen presence of the leads. Its biggest crime is simply not being very funny, especially after such a long time away. Horror is an ever-evolving genre, so its parodies should be just as clever and forward-thinking.

Scary Movie 4 (2006)
Anna Faris reaches into a toilet in Scary Movie 4
After the highs of Scary Movie 3, it only makes sense that its successor would be a step back in overall quality. The second of the David Zucker Scary Movie sequels has a much larger scope, and therein lies the biggest problem with the franchise’s second half. The core of the movie is built around a spoof of War of the Worlds, which probably wasn’t a good move. The shotgun approach to spoofing has never worked very well, and Scary Movie 4 is pretty unfocused. For every funny bit, there are half a dozen groan-inducing moments that actively sap a lot of the enjoyment. Innumerable celebrity cameos also start to distract from the movie’s so-called narrative. Faris and Hall are crowded out by less memorable co-stars, but still shine through. Scary Movie 4 isn’t great, but it’s much better than the noteworthy parody movies of the time. There are some pretty funny sequences, especially when the writers take time to really dig into a particular spoof.

Scary Movie 2 (2001)
Though it isn’t the best (or even second best) film in the series, Scary Movie 2 is certainly the most ambitious of the bunch. The original movie took aim at contemporary slasher and teen films, while the first sequel poked fun at movies like The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Exorcist, and The Haunting. This allows for a bit more creativity, even if the jokes don’t always land. Scary Movie 2 is somewhat lost in the no man’s land between crass and wacky humor, and legitimate straightforward comedy. As such, it offers a mixed bag that is usually more hits than misses. Even the bad parts have charm and clear intent. The cast from the first film returns, and the new additions actually improve the overall chemistry. It’s clear that the creators had an appreciation for the movies they were spoofing, something that almost all the subsequent films lacked. While much of the humor is dated and hasn’t aged well, it’s a fascinating time capsule to the early 2000s. The identity of Scary Movie was solidified in its sequel, even if its successors couldn’t quite live up.

Scary Movie 3 (2003)
Regina Hall and Anna Faris in Scary Movie 3
Bringing in David Zucker to helm the third Scary Movie resulted in a brilliant spoof film that is certainly better than its reputation. Scary Movie 3 expands the scope of the story, but primarily builds its parody around the movies The Ring and Signs. The refocus back towards modern movies was the right move after Scary Movie 2.
Zucker’s sense of humor is different from the Wayans’, so the third film has elements of pacing and tone that the first two didn’t. A lot of the laughs are played completely straight, and it’s more like The Naked Gun than the earlier Scary Movie flicks. Despite being undeniably silly, Scary Movie 3 has some pretty clever jokes. Sight gags are Zuckers’ specialty, and they abound in the 2003 sequel. When comparing the third film to the other David Zucker Scary Movie titles, it’s qualities really shine through. It doesn’t get bogged down with cameos or unfunny references, and tells a pretty streamlined story. It’s no masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, but it is a genuinely funny spoof movie that is focused and concise. Sadly, the later films took the wrong lessons from Scary Movie 3.

Scary Movie (2000)
Ghostface smiles on the phone in the wazzup scene from Scary Movie
Like any good joke, it’s always funniest the first time you hear it. Scary Movie is so fundamentally linked to the year 2000 that it’s impossible to separate it from the popular culture of the era. From its spoofing of Scream to its references to famous commercial slogans from the time, the horror parody is dated in all the best ways possible. Wherever the franchise went in later years, they never really could touch the simple charms of Scary Movie. A lot of the jokes feel tired all these years later, but Scary Movie was the first to say what a lot of people were thinking. It not only poked fun at specific movies, but it also lambasted horror movie cliches as reflected in the exaggerated traits of the characters and their asinine behavior. Through the use of low-brow humor, the spoof actually deconstructed the media it was parodying. It’s the best movie in the franchise by far, and deserves a spot among the all-time greats of the comedy subgenre. It has some elements that haven’t aged well, but it is a pretty solid look back at early 2000s comedy. The franchise probably will never rise to the same heights again, especially if the latest Scary Movie is any indication.
