Everytime I set up a new Jellyfin server, these are the plugins I install first

Setting up a new Jellyfin server always starts the same way for me. I spend hours organizing libraries, fixing metadata disasters, downloading posters online, and then realizing that the sun has set while I micromanage every part of the server. The real fun, however, comes from installing plugins that transform Jellyfin into a genuinely premium media server. Right out of the box, Jellyfin does a a lot of things right, but its plugins are how you can really make it your own. They add missing features that we’re all already used to on other premium streaming services, making Jellyfin truly ready for prime time.
Intro Skipper plugins are basically mandatory on Jellyfin

Impossible not to have for binge-watchers

Ask anyone who uses Jellyfin what the very first plugin they installed was, and chances are it was an Intro Skipper plugin. There are plenty of Intro Skipper plugins for Jellyfin users to choose from, and this one has been my go-to on the past two Jellyfin servers I set up. Being able to skip the intro as well as the credit roll of each episode, especially while binge-watching, feels like a godsend. In fact, given how common this feature is in paid subscription services like Netflix, Prime Video, and even Plex, its utility on a Jellyfin server cannot be overstated.
CinemaMode brings the theater experience back home

Nothing like pre-movie trailers to make the night feel complete

If you don’t consider pre-movie trailers and screenings an integral part of the movie-going experience, we can’t be friends. That’s why Plex offers theater-like trailers before it plays your movie. Sadly, it’s a paid feature on Plex, but thankfully, this Jellyfin plugin adds the same ability to your server. With this plugin, you can have your Jellyfin server fetch trailers by itself and play them before the movie for the full cinema experience on a long weekend. That ought to give you enough time to empty the popcorn bucket halfway, even before the first scene of the actual movie plays. You can even add which movies you’re interested in and which ones you’re not, so it doesn’t show you trailers from genres you don’t care for.

MyAnimeSync fixes one of anime fans’ biggest annoyances

Automatically syncing MyAnimeList progress takes away so much busywork

Anyone who is serious about their anime watching also maintains an account on MyAnimeList. Thankfully, instead of manually updating entries on MAL every time I watch a handful of episodes, this plugin handles it all in the background. If you watch even a semi-serious amount of anime on Jellyfin, this plugin will make sure that MAL updates automatically once you watch an episode of an anime.

The MyAnimeSync plugin requires users to connect to their MyAnimeList account, and use their Jellyfin server once a month.

In fact, this proves to be particularly useful when you get back to watching something after a long gap, since you won’t just forget what episode you were on. For anime watchers, MyAnimeSync really makes Jellyfin feel like a proper, modern anime platform rather than a DIY media server.
Home Screen Sections makes Jellyfin feel truly personal

A customized homepage changes the entire vibe of your server

The sheer amount of customization you can do on your Jellyfin server is one of its biggest advantages over other mainstream platforms, and the Home Screen Sections plugin lets you tap into exactly that. Stock Jellyfin can seem soulless or devoid of style to anyone who might be interested in a little flair, after all. The Home Screen Sections plugin lets you build a proper personalized dashboard with separate sections for recently added movies, random sitcom episodes, “continue-watching” rows for anime, or even entire libraries dedicated just to shows you rewatch for comfort. Having recently set up a full Jellyfin server for a friend, it wasn’t until I installed this plugin that my friend actually praised Jellyfin out loud, and finally seemed excited about using it daily. Plus, each user’s homepage looks different, since they can set it the way they want.

In-Player Episode Preview makes binge-watching way less frustrating

This makes for a surprisingly premium-feeling addition

It’s impossible to imagine navigating a large TV series library without having an episode preview that goes season-by-season, like all major streaming networks have. Not only does that allow you to have a full episode list in a season, but it also gives you a synopsis of each episode, along with a small progress bar on the thumbnail that tells you how much of an episode you’ve watched already. The stock version of Jellyfin doesn’t have this feature, but that problem is solved with a single plugin. The In-Player Episode Preview plugin adds the episode preview list directly to the video player, like Netflix, so you can always check the episode list and even switch seasons without interrupting playback.
Jellyscrub massively improves navigation without much effort

You can’t live without thumbnail scrubbing once you use it

Another non-negotiable plugin that everyone with a half-decent Jellyfin server swears by, Jellyscrub is perhaps the first, or at worst, second plugin you should install. It generates thumbnail previews while scrubbing through videos, which makes a massive difference to the overall experience. After all, you only realize the importance of thumbnail previews when you don’t have them and end up overshooting scenes while fast-forwarding. For those with larger libraries, Jellyscrub can definitely take a little longer to process, especially if your server houses high-bitrate remuxes and massive TV collections. The payoff, though, is absolutely worth it. In fact, Jellyscrub should be considered a core part of the Jellyfin experience, given the amount of friction it removes from every viewing session.
OpenSubtitles removes one of self-hosting’s biggest headaches

Automatic subtitle downloads save countless late-night searches

If you’ve got all sorts of media on your Jellyfin server, including older films, anime, foreign movies, and even random TV releases with questionable audio balancing, then subtitle support can genuinely make or break your self-hosted media server. That’s where the OpenSubtitles plugin comes in, and it removes the headache of manually hunting subtitle files online at two in the morning. With this plugin, Jellyfin can automatically fetch subtitles, saving a ridiculous amount of time.

The best part about this Jellyfin plugin, however, is how it works just as well for the less tech-savvy friends and family members using your Jellyfin server. Subtitle formats, external downloads, or naming conventions that would otherwise make them roll their eyes just work in the background with the OpenSubtitles plugin, so you don’t have to do the busywork of manually downloading subtitles for each user who runs into a hurdle.

Jellyfin is one of the best Plex alternatives you can get, and that’s thanks to its open-source nature and powerful set of features. There are apps for basically every platform and it’s completely free to run your very own server.

Jellyfin really is ready to go toe-to-toe with Plex

It makes sense for someone to wonder why Jellyfin doesn’t already ship with these features, but that’s the beauty of its community-driven soul. Jellyfin remains open-source and free, with an entire community building plugins for it so that users can truly customize the media server and self-host it exactly the way they want to, with the features, aesthetics, and vibes they prefer. Self-hosting definitely comes with a learning curve, and sure, Jellyfin still has rough edges here and there, but plugins like these are exactly why so many people stick with it long-term. They smooth out the experience, remove friction, and make the server feel uniquely yours in a way mainstream platforms never really can.
