Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot Sequel Leaves Fans Split

Back in 2020, Bandai Namco released Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, a retelling of the original Dragon Ball Z series framed through Goku’s adventures. It was a simple concept that had been done before, but not quite as in-depth, covering multiple arcs throughout the Buu saga, as well as some Super, Daima, and original Dragon Ball stories. While it sold well, some enthusiasts are keen on a sequel that takes on events not covered in the first entry. Over on X, fans are talking about that very Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot sequel, but not everyone is on the same page. Given the recent appearance of CyberConnect2 president Hiroshi Matsuyama at an official event, fans are split.

At Japan Expo this week, Matsuyama was asked about a sequel to Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. He was cagey, but did not outright deny the existence of a sequel, amid the impending release of Dragon Ball XenoVerse 3. Here’s the full breakdown of what happened: “When asked whether they plan to release a DBZ KAKAROT 2, he remained very evasive, neither saying yes nor no, so no info or hint at all. He just said they’re working hard on their anime licenses.” Some are hopeful, but want improvements: “If they make a sequel for Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, then they need to improve the gameplay, more story content (original Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z movies, Dragon Ball Super, and Dragon Ball GT), and more transformations for post-game.” Others are fully in, and would like a sequel to cover some Dragon Ball Super content: “Well, that sounds interesting. Definitely would love to see a DBS Kakarot. Then again… No news on Sparking Zero right?”

A few fans are surprised at the lack of confirmation, especially since they feel like Kakarot already covered everything that needed to be covered: “At this point what DB content would a sequel include? Kakarot hit the majority of Dragon Ball Story points so outside of maybe some movie content what else is left?”

Select fans want to see the formula used for other franchises: “Would it be cool if Bandai Namco Entertainment, and CyberConnect 2 making a Digimon RPG open-world videogame based on an anime series, or a Sailor Moon RPG open-world videogame that you can follow the story of Usagi’s adventures throughout the 5 seasons of the series.” While it seems like the Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot story is done, there are still plenty of places it could go in the future. A Dragon Ball Super: Kakarot could do well, especially if it covers adventures we haven’t seen in the previous iteration.
