Batman: Caped Crusader will reinvent the titular superhero’s most infamous and recognizable villain of all time. Batman: Caped Crusader season 2 is finally on the way, and one of the most popular villains of the franchise will be tagging along. After briefly teasing the Joker at the very end of the first season, the Prime Video series is preparing to fully introduce Batman’s greatest enemy. While countless versions of the Clown Prince of Crime have appeared in comic books, movies, TV series, and video games over the years, the creative team is taking a very different approach this time around.

Batman debuted in Detective Comics #27 in May 1939. Cartoonist Bob Kane received sole credit for creating the character for the next 76 years — on every comic, every TV series, every film — despite being only half of the real partnership. His uncredited collaborator wrote much of the original story, designed the cowl and cape, invented the name “Bruce Wayne,” named Gotham City, and helped create the Joker, the Penguin, the Riddler and Catwoman. Jerry Robinson (option A) really did co-create the Joker and Robin alongside Finger and Kane — he was the third member of the early studio — but the cowl, cape, “Bruce Wayne,” Gotham City and the actual script of Detective Comics #27 were Finger’s. Joe Shuster co-created Superman, not Batman. Otto Binder created Supergirl and Mary Marvel. Finger signed away his byline in 1939 and didn’t receive on-screen credit until 2015.

Cesar Romero’s Joker on the 1966–1968 ABC Batman series — white grease-paint, green wig, red lipstick, manic giggle — remains one of the most-cited comedic TV villains in American history. Romero, a leading-man matinée idol since the 1930s, agreed to the role on one condition: he refused to do a specific thing for the makeup. You can still see what he refused if you look closely. In an interview with Cinema Blend, the Prime Video series’ executive producer, James Tucker, explained that the show drew inspiration from the Joker’s very first comic book appearances, particularly his debut in Batman #1. Rather than using the character’s now-infamous smile and chaotic behavior, the creative team focused instead on the very first iteration of the character’s cold, emotionless side. As a result, viewers will see a more restrained and perhaps even more unsettling version of the villain. This specific detail is a noticeable departure from many animated adaptations of the character. Iterations like Mark Hamill’s legendary portrayal of the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series leaned into his more wild side. Batman: Caped Crusader, on the other hand, appears to be eliminating that side of the Clown Prince of Crime in favor of a more serious antagonist, making him feel unpredictable in an entirely different way. Tucker also revealed that the creative team studied the Joker’s film origins by revisiting the movie, The Man Who Laughs, whose physical appearance influenced the character’s original design. At the same time, the goal was to create a version that feels unlike previous incarnations while still respecting the villain’s roots.
The Joker was created by Bill Finger, Bob Kane, and Jerry Robinson. The villain made his first appearance in 1940’s Batman #1. Surprisingly, the Joker was initially only supposed to appear in that one specific issue. In the earlier drafts of the storyline, the writers were going to kill him off. However, the editors at DC Comics intervened and spared the character’s life. Now, he is arguably one of the most infamous villains in all media.
Batman: Caped Crusader season 2 will return on Friday, July 31, 2026. All 10 episodes of the new season will be released at the same time on Prime Video.
